In the above poem, the great truth pictured is that deception becomes easier as darkness descends upon the Earth. Human beings are left on their own, in all their pride and frailty, to “decide which is right and which is an illusion” – an ultimately arbitrary and impossible task when the truth fades into darkness.
Yet, light is to darkness as truth is to deception! In the light, the details and color of reality and of “ultimate reality” are revealed. And from the Bible we know that the light overpowers the darkness. Light is connected to the eternal and living Word of God through Whom “all things were made” (John 1:1-5). The “Light of the World”, Jesus Christ, is our way out of the darkness!
As darkness prevails, so does opportunity for those who would deceive. Under cover of darkness, those with power and authority to impose their own agenda dictate to the rest of us “which is right and which is an illusion”. As I’ve written about many times in the past and again last month, this has been happening in the modern era with edict-driven, agenda-driven authoritarian “science”. As creationists, we’ve seen for many years how evolutionists regularly censor the evidence and discussion of alternative theories. Creationists have long noted, in fact, that evolution is essentially a faith held by humanistic modern mankind!
Agenda-driven science is now being noticed beyond the confines of evolution. The term is “scientism” – a near religious faith in the “scientific” authorities and bureaucrats put up by the government and media. We are told to trust the scientific authorities and bureaucrats to decide in the darkness “which is right and which is an illusion”.
A quick and current example of this is that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are making the effort to document death certificates entered into their database in a way that maximizes the number of people who have died with COVID, but not necessarily from COVID.
Yet, they don’t document in the same way death certificates of those who died after receiving COVID vaccinations! Nor do they fund any research for autopsies to discover the actual cause of deaths. And they’ve consistently suppressed simple, early treatment and prevention programs to save lives. This is not evidence-based science! So what’s behind the distortion in collecting and reporting the data? That’s a good question. For whatever reason, vaccinations and COVID fear seem to be the agenda. And if you don’t agree with the approved agenda, then you’d better be quiet!
Who do you think presides over the darkness? Obviously, it is Satan, who started as the archangel Lucifer. He can be “transformed into an angel of light” and can be thought of as the spiritual “cold hearted orb that rules the night”, removing “the colors (truth) from our sight”. Indeed, the Bible says that he is “a liar, and the father of it”, able to produce “lying wonders” intended to “deceive the very elect”.
But we also read in the Bible about the tremendous luminosity and brilliance of light that is in the presence of God. In fact, the Bible says that “God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all”. And it tells us to “walk in the light as He is in the light”. In Him, light and its inherent colors are not faded out – they are not “removed from our sight”. In Him, full color and detail and brilliance are revealed more than we can even imagine in all its ultimate truth and beauty!
As the late Dr. Henry Morris pointed out in the notes of his Defender’s Bible, when God said “Let there be light” while the Spirit of God “moved” (hovered, fluttered, vibrated), He wasn’t creating light (Genesis 1:2-3). God already dwells in light (1 Timothy 6:16)! What God did at the outset of creation was activate light energy (Hebrew: or) over the earth. Light-givers (Hebrew: ma-or) – sun, moon, and stars in the “firmament”, including the planets – were created later in Genesis 1:14-17.
Fundamental equations of physics say that matter and energy are determined by and, in fact, are composed of the speed and various frequencies of light waves in the electromagnetic spectrum. Matter consists of vibrational energy – quantum packages, so to speak – defined by frequencies and wavelengths of various radiation. It is this God-infused fundamental illumination and energy that we are to tap into – abiding in His Spirit and His Truth!
Jesus said, “When your eye is single (spiritually clear, perceptive, and focused on God), your whole body also is full of light (benefiting from God’s truth and energy). But when your eye is evil (spiritually blind, deceived), your body also is full of darkness (starving for truth, purpose, and spiritual satisfaction). Take heed, therefore, that the light which is in you be not darkness” (Luke 11:34-35). As followers of Christ, we should “take heed”. We might think that “red is grey and yellow white” because the “cold hearted orb that rules the night” has “removed the colors from our sight”. And remember – half truths are still lies.
When he was arrested by the Soviet authorities in 1974, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn quickly released his courageous essay “Live Not by Lies”. It answered the question of what people can do even when they have no voice. He wrote: “Like parasites, lies can only exist when they are attached to a person.” So he advised, “Never knowingly support lies. Walk out from a session, meeting, lecture, play, or film as soon as [you hear the speaker] utter a lie, ideological drivel, or shameless propaganda.” The choice is “either truth or lies … spiritual independence or spiritual servility”.
As we read in John 12:46, “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.” We can distinguish that which is right from that which is illusion only by staying close to Jesus, the light of the world!
