Do the Days Matter?

Exodus 20:11
“For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested    the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

In the previous Creation Moment, I put the case, as I often like to do, for the days of Genesis being actual 24-hour days. Whenever I do so, I often get asked: “Does it really matter what you believe about the days of creation?” The answer to that question is a definite yes … or no!

In one sense, it doesn’t matter. You will not lose your salvation by disagreeing with me over the days of creation. The Bible does not say: “Whoever calls on the Name of the Lord and believes in a literal six-day creation will be saved.” But just because an issue is non-salvific does not mean it is not important. For instance, many Christians who believe the Genesis days could be long periods of time will still say that they do not accept the theory of evolution. They believe it is important to believe that God created. And so do we. Therefore, old and young earth creationists alike will argue the importance of not believing evolution – and rightly so. And neither group will say that those Christians who still believe in evolution have lost their salvation.

So the real reason why we continue to teach that the days of creation were literal days is not for salvific reasons but because of our strong belief in the inerrancy and authority of Scripture. We take seriously what God has told us in His word and do not look for ways to get around it.

Prayer: Thank You, Father, for forgiving me of my many sins – especially my times of unbelief. Thank You for sending Your Son to save us. Amen.
