Protein in Space

Genesis 1:31
“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.”

A recent report that an alien protein has been found in a meteorite is so controversial that even many evolutionary scientists are skeptical of the claims. Scientists at Harvard University obtained a sample from a meteorite found in Algeria in 1990. They drilled into the sample with carefully sanitized drills, powdered the portions, and mixed with a number of liquids. The resulting samples were then vaporized and analyzed by mass spectroscopy. The team claims to have found a number of amino acids in the sample with a few other atoms, which they claim shows that the molecules have been formed from the break-up of protein molecules.

Other scientists expressed great skepticism. Part of the issue would be the definition of a protein. It seems that amino acids have previously been found in places such as comets. But these were simple amino acids and not the kind found in living organisms. It is true that proteins are made from a number of amino acids, but a compound formed by joining amino acid molecules is not necessarily going to be a protein. Moreover, despite the care taken by the researchers, these samples were taken from a meteorite discovered twenty years ago which had lain in the ground for some considerable time previously.

Research is always interesting. But repeated attempts to demonstrate that organic life evolved from inorganic matter will always be in vain. God has told us the wonderful way in which He made life in the pages of Genesis.
