Genesis 1:28
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

In the days before computer control, and when TV in the UK had only three channels, my father, as a senior power engineer, had to watch for the commercial breaks in popular TV shows. At such times, millions of British people switched on their electric kettles at the same time, causing a national power drain, so engineering managers like my father had to be prepared to increase the output of their power plants to cope with the sudden, but predictable, increases in demand. Otherwise, there would have been power blackouts.

Today, such nationwide power variations are smoothed by the use of, for example, pump-storage power plants. In the home, power can be stored in lithium-ion batteries. But for medium-sized towns, a new use of an old technology might be of help in the form of cryo-batteries. A cryo-battery takes air and uses electricity to cool it down into a liquid, which requires very little technology to store. When the liquid air is allowed to vaporize again, it expands 700 times, and this expansion can be used to drive turbines, producing electricity. Such a plant could easily soak up excess power made by renewable sources, such as wind or wave, and then deliver it back when the wind drops, powering a medium-sized town.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics applies, and cryo-batteries have a 75% efficiency. But God has granted human beings intelligence and ingenuity, and technology like cryo-batteries demonstrates humanity’s God-given mandate to have dominion over the earth.

Prayer: Help us, Lord, to be good stewards, as we fulfill our dominion mandate over this planet. Amen.
