The New Morality

John 14:21

“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”

No society can exist without a morality. Yet it sometimes seems to us as if our present society has none. Practices which caused scandals even two or three decades ago are now not only common practice, but are celebrated by society. All of us are invited to join in that celebration, and those of us who cannot do so find ourselves targeted. Worst of all, babies are murdered in the womb in the name of freedom – indeed, some even want to destroy them after birth.

So does today’s society have any standards, against which we may not transgress? Strangely enough, it does. As once we rightly criticized those who were considered holocaust deniers – those who foolishly and wickedly deny some or all of the sufferings of the Jews under the Third Reich – there are, by analogy, those who are labeled as climate change deniers. Casting doubt on the pseudo-science of the climate change alarmists is a no-no. Immoral acts committed against this new orthodoxy would include burning coal, owning too large a car or even eating too much meat. While some remedial actions that we could take on these issues might be worthwhile, they are not biblically wrong. Our main concern must always be for the commands of our Lord. “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” (John 14:21)

Prayer: Lord God, help us to remember that our love for You and Your salvation should be reflected in our obedience. Amen.
