Genesis 1:26
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

Growing up in the UK in the 60s and 70s, one of the most fascinating TV programs at the time was a weekly half-hour show called Tomorrow’s World. This was a show about science, but, as can be expected, it frequently entered the realm of science fiction. Today, Brits of a certain age fondly recall many predictions made on the show which have not come to fruition. Some of the show’s failures were seen at the time, as, in the early years, it was a live show. So viewers watched as a new type of car jack disintegrated, and a robot-controlled snooker player, which was confidently predicted to be able to win a world championship by 2000, could not even switch on. Other predictions were closer to the mark. We really do have the jet packs predicted in the 60s – but they are not items of regular personal transportation as the show thought would happen by 1990.

In the midst of these failures, it is often easy to overlook the show’s successes. I still remember them demonstrating an early personal computer, with applications operated by a cursor and mouse. They also successfully predicted ATM machines, breathalyzers, compact discs, personal stereos and even robotic vacuum cleaners.

Part of the corollary of God making us in His image is that human beings have a creativity similar to His – though, not ex nihilo. Each new invention is, therefore, evidence of the hand of God, even if the inventor does not acknowledge Him.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the many gifts that You have given us. Thank You especially  for the gift of Your Son, whom You sent to save us from our sins. Amen.
