Jude 1:3
“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”
A Christian satirical website ran an article entitled “Congregation Prays Graduating Senior Be Protected from Basic Secular Arguments They Never Bothered to Prepare Her for”. As with so many articles on that site, it contains a great deal of truth – so much so, that one doesn’t know whether to laugh at it or cry.
The fictional youth pastor addressed the high school graduate thusly: “Your deeply held beliefs that you have never had questioned and are mostly professed out of obedience to your parents will be challenged like never before. We haven’t prepared you for this onslaught, but we are going to remedy that right now with sixty seconds of ceremonial prayer.”
This raises the question of whether our young people really are prepared to meet the secular world. But how are they going to defend the faith? How many of them have been told not to worry about questions of dinosaurs and evolution, but just to trust in Jesus. What apologetics training they have received has been in the form of decontextualized Bible verses such as “a day with the Lord is like a thousand years”. That latter verse, 2 Peter 3:8, is actually the answer to why Jesus has not yet returned, but is often used to imply that there is nothing wrong with a Christian accepting that the days of Genesis are not real days.
The implication is clear. If we continue to provide our young people with such poor apologetics, we leave them unprepared for life.
Prayer: Father, please protect our young people against the onslaughts of the world. And encourage those of us older in the faith to train our young people so to defend their faith. Amen.
