As amazing as the human body is, it is subject to “disease”. Now think about this word for a moment. It is a compound word, “dis–ease”. The ease with which professional baseball players, for example, execute their game is a beauty to watch because their game is near perfection. Similarly, a healthy human body which functions with a good immune system and biochemistry is not only at “ease” but working near perfectly – and beautiful to behold. But “dis-ease” plagues us, coming as it does with imperfection.

Here we are getting to the spiritual root of things. God’s moral perfection through the Word and Spirit gave birth to the physical creation. The fundamental power upholding all things is the Lord, and the power that He commands is spiritual at its root (Hebrews 1:3 and John 4:24).

There are, in fact, spiritual roots of disease. That is now clear from medical evidence. Take, for example, stress and anxiety, which are words for “fear” – and fear can come as a spirit “not of God” (2 Timothy 1:7, Romans 8:15, 1 John 4:18). Medical science now acknowledges all sorts of adverse biochemical response and disease rooted in different kinds of anxiety disorders and stress. Sustained anxiety leads to excess and eventually toxic release of the hormones cortisol and epinephrine (adrenaline), which can cause immune system damage, irritable bowel syndrome, autoimmune diseases, heart disease and other health issues.

If the roots of the disease are spiritual, then it stands to reason that the final cure, as opposed to treating symptoms, should also be spiritual. And the spiritual weapons which the Bible calls out for us – confession, repentance, forgiveness, prayer, spiritual warfare in the name of Jesus, resting in the Lord, meditating on Him and contemplating His perfection – are tools we can bring to bear with great effect!
