It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible. – George Washington
The noble Commander in Chief, President and “Indispensable Man” for the founding of America was right. Yet, today that belief on the part of the world’s leaders is sadly missing. Instead, they mostly espouse the mantra of a godless, globalist, humanist collectivist vision. What has become a hymn for globalism and secular humanism was sung again to open the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics:
Imagine there’s no heaven…no hell below us… Imagine there’s no countries… nothing to die for… And no religion too… Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope some day you’ll join us, and the world will be as one. – John Lennon, “Imagine”, 1971
In contrast to what was idealized in the founders’ vision of America, “one nation under God”, people are being led to want “one world under man”. A godless, humanist utopia is the goal of global power brokers in the age-old rebellion against our Creator and Redeemer.
One of the key points of rebellion has been the ascendance of evolutionism. As creationists have been dealing with for years, free speech is allowed only so long as it aligns with an approved narrative. In secular institutions and media, people are being banned from publishing or teaching certain arguments – as Bible believers have for many years been banned from teaching against evolution. Under the domination and control of God-lessness, biblical norms of yesteryear have become the unacceptable views of today.
And it doesn’t matter that the new norms are completely untruthful or unscientific. For example, there is no way for men to become women or vice versa. Every cell of the body contains either an XY chromosome pair (male) or an XX chromosome pair (female). And it doesn’t matter how many surgeries or hormone-altering drugs are taken. The Bible points out this fixity of gender in its very first chapter: “male and female created he them” (Genesis 1:27).
But the Bible’s narratives are becoming unacceptable views with the increasingly deceptive propaganda and intimidation by God-less institutions of power. The Bible says that there is spiritual evil in this world against which we struggle, a spiritual force or “force-field”, like a “medium” through which spiritual messaging operates under the radar of our intellects. This is why we are to discern with spiritual eyes and ears, not just our physical eyes and ears (Matthew 11:15).
The man who coined the phrase “The medium is the message”, Marshall McLuhan, also said, “Electric circuitry is an extension of the nervous system” (Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, 1964). He was noting the fact that there is a physical (electromagnetic) as well as a psychic (human neuro-electro-chemical) “field” or “medium” extending the human faculty. This “medium” both carries and also transcends the “message”. McLuhan interestingly foresaw that “The successor to politics will be propaganda.” This has become ever more apparent today, enabled also by the 24/7 news cycle of our electronic and cyberspace media age.
The tech monopolies now exert a level of control over American public opinion through clever use of media that has no precedent in all of history. By selecting which topics merit discussion and how the topics are discussed (the approved “narrative”), no population has ever been more skillfully manipulated than the modern population is being manipulated. As Christians, we must remember what the Bible teaches about the prevalence and source of worldly “false philosophy” (Colossians 2:8) and deception. The devil, who is “a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44), and the sinful flesh of mankind, which is naturally inclined to those lies, are the problems.
Our physical bodies are affected by and actually emit an invisible electro-magnetic field. We both emanate and receive the “medium” as well as the “message” – to use the language of McLuhan. Passions, emotional intensity, high-impact visuals, images and sound trigger hormonal electrochemical responses in our bodies which, because of the electron exchange, create magnetic fields. Because we are alive, we are constant recipients of this activity! It is what makes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) work – as well as all sorts of other high-tech imaging diagnostic equipment.
In addition, the hormonal and neurotransmitter electrochemical reactions within us can reinforce good behavior or lead to addictive and destructive behaviors because of their emotional and physical “feel-good” or “feel-bad” attachments.
Researchers can place you in a functional MRI (fMRI) machine and show you a series of pictures, noting the part of your brain that has activity and how intense that activity is compared to the average subject you might see. Social media, with continuous improvements from Artificial Intelligence (AI), are designed to feed us more of what we want to see and, therefore, can easily lead us down an addictive, destructive path of human flesh and frailty.
Clearly, our experience and human history itself demonstrate that emotional, psychological and spiritual media can be manipulated. Adolf Hitler, with his frenzied speeches, and the Nazi propaganda machine are one example. The electrochemical as well as spiritual receptors of the human body can cause either edification (build us up) or degeneration (tear us down). And the Bible urges us to “Keep (guard) thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23)!
Indeed, God’s Word is itself a spiritual “medium” of its wonderful “message”! It is a medium of the Holy Spirit. There are many proof-texts for this. And we are to take in both the medium and the message! The Bible builds us up with more than mere words. See Hebrews 4:12, 2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21, Proverbs 4:20-22, and 1 Corinthians 2:14.
Christ’s Resurrection – which we celebrate in a special way this month – reminds us of the wonderful future before us in our eternal home! But while we are here, we have work to do! And that’s why we proclaim biblical truth to our neighbors, in love – firm but kind. Thank you so much for being part of this Great Commission which the Lord has given us!
