It was in the winter a few months before Passover. The crowd approached the stone which covered the mouth of the cave and at the given word they rolled it away. Jesus “cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come forth!’” (John 11:43). And Lazarus of Bethany, who had been dead four days, came out bound head to foot in his grave wrappings. Jesus then said, “Loose him, and let him go” (John 11:44).
New life, resurrection and freedom are what the God of the Bible is all about! As creationists, we know that the ultimate power behind the creation is the spoken word of God. Whether it’s “Then God said, ‘Let there be…’” (multiple times in Genesis 1), or “Lazarus, come forth”, God’s creative and re-creative power have been at work since the beginning! “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth,…For he spake and it was done, he commanded and it stood fast” (Psalm 33:6,9). What Easter reminds us of is that God not only creates life to begin with but he makes life anew by his supernatural power!
Several months after Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, He entered Jerusalem for the Passover week and was greeted triumphantly by admiring crowds of people, only to be put to death by the end of that week. Yet, he was resurrected on the third day after his burial and, unlike Lazarus, His was a permanent resurrection. Jesus rose nevermore to die. His death and resurrection is the focal point of Scripture and the most important event in world history! It paved the way for all of us, for “whosoever will”, to enter in to eternal life.
Last month I wrote about how our hearts are much more than just blood pumps – how they are, as the Bible describes, at the very center of our entire being. I mentioned how our hearts, for example, radiate an electromagnetic field, indicating that we function and interact within ourselves and with each other not only on a physical and chemical/molecular level but on a more immaterial level as well. Our hearts induce an actual electromagnetic energy-field around us like the electromagnetic field induced around power lines which interfere with AM radio, for example (Electromagnetic Interference, EMI).
The implication from this scientific reality is that a still more immaterial field works within us and around us – a spiritual reality that was present at creation and which is at work today. You see, science tells us the following: 1) Our physical bodies reduce down to chemical molecules, 2) Chemical molecules function and interact through chemical reaction (through hormones detaching and attaching at receptor sites across nerve synapses), 3) All such reaction mechanisms are fundamentally electrical by way of immaterial electron transfer, and 4) Such electron movement generates an electromagnetic field, an energy-field.
The Bible teaches that God, who is spirit, interacts with people – who are spirit, soul, and body.
(1 Thessalonians 5:23), through a spiritual “energy-field” – one that can either tune-in, tune-out or be interfered with. The Bible describes this interaction as basically a “faith-field” which connects us to God and which “quenches the fiery darts of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16).
Now, let me ask you a question. Are electromagnetic energy and sound related? And let’s use the word “light” for electromagnetic (EM) energy because there is a whole spectrum of EM radiation of varying frequency and wavelength … and visible light is one small portion of it. In fact, in physics, all EM radiation is called “light”. So my question is: Can light radiating by quantum waves be converted to or from sound, a compression wave? That’s what the Bible says happened at creation through the word of God, and also what happened at the raising of Lazarus from the dead. The sounded word from Jesus infused the cellular activity within the body of Lazarus so that he was energized back to life and began again the biological electrochemical activity generating its electromagnetic field again.
The answer is that light and sound overlap in various ways. One phenomenon is sono-luminescence, in which ultrasound bombarding an air bubble trapped in water will cause high-frequency compression and pulsation which leads to a pulsating light and incredibly high temperature in the bubble. Another, now everyday occurrence, is the going back and forth between cell phones via satellite, Wifi and Bluetooth to amplified sound, or vice versa with recorded audio uploaded to the Internet.
I think what we find in measuring science with the Bible is that while science cannot decipher the actual spirit world, it can get us to the very edge of spiritual reality. Science does this, for example, when it explains that physical, material things are fundamentally, sub-atomically, vibrating energy in a tremendous amount of space – bringing us to the edge of a spiritual essence underlying the material creation. Similarly, science helps us understand light and sound – so that the sounding forth of God’s Word, the use of our voices and language, and the energy field of hands, head and heart can become effective tools and sensors for spiritual purposes as the Bible says. This is why music can be so powerful, both in personal experience and per biblical guidance, and why the laying on of hands is an important biblical form in praying for people. It’s as if sound and the EM energy field are “the Wardrobe” in C.S. Lewis’ classic allegory about Christianity, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
The Wardrobe, if you recall, was how the children in Lewis’ classic tale went between the normal world of England and the supernatural world of Narnia. The Lion was Aslan, the Christ figure. And the Witch was the Satan figure who controlled Narnia with continual winter – though “never Christmas”. And C.S. Lewis, just as with the consummation of biblical revelation wraps up his tale with the resurrection of Aslan after his death on the stone altar of the Witch … and he then releases those trapped frozen in their stone statues under her spell and brings springtime to Narnia.
The death of Aslan, of course, reminds us of the cross. And the Lion’s resurrection reminds us of the resurrection of Christ – the most important event in the history of the world!
