Dear Friend of Creation Moments,
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
Much of the beauty and power of that inspirational statement is because it is the absolute truth of God! God has designed us to value and appreciate what He desires – righteousness! In other words, character is what matters. And He makes no distinction on the basis of skin color – He is color blind! For there is one human race, descendants of Adam and Eve! As the Bible puts it, He “hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth…” (Acts 17:26). And, “…God is no respecter of persons (does not show favoritism)” (Acts 10:34).
Yet, it has been sixty years since Martin Luther King delivered that speech and led a civil rights movement that succeeded in changing the remaining unjust laws of this nation, bringing civil rights in law to all people. But now. true civil rights have been side-tracked by another notion – a new racist twist which derives from Marxist Critical Theory. Karl Marx developed the notion of what he called “critique” of ideology, which involved linking it with the application of social revolution. Marx famously said, as written on his tombstone: “The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it.”1
“Critical Theory” was thus further refined and developed by Marxist writers such as Max Horkheimer to be social theory that seeks not only to critique society but to change it. And in Marxist methodology, it defines and applies the “critique” to an “oppressed” victim class which is pitted against an “oppressor” class to stir up grievances and bring about a “utopia” of equal outcomes. Victim groups in civil rights now include being defined as LGBTQ, or gender, or skin color or ethnicity. So today, in repudiation of a biblical worldview, we are back to being “judged by the color of our skin”, NOT “the content of our character”! And Critical Race Theory (CRT) as well as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are cultural Marxist notions, known also as “woke”, which have taken hold in public education as well as the corporate world to normalize a “reverse” racism, a “neo-racism”.
In December 2023, many people were shocked to realize how entrenched such notions were when presidents of Ivy League colleges testified to Congress. Their failure to condemn and discipline the abuses of Jewish students on their campuses – in the aftermath of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel October 7, 2023 – was appalling.
The testimony of Harvard President Claudine Gay at the December hearing was further complicated when it became clear that there is not only a severe lack of moral courage and moral clarity on campus these days, but she herself, a black Haitian American, was a very substandard scholar to have attained her position and one who flagrantly violated Harvard’s own ethical standards for plagiarism in her few published academic papers. The whole world could see that she was hired because of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Not only did she herself fill a DEI quota, but she, in her previous position as Dean of the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences, had a history of advancing DEI. Harvard liked her priorities of advancing “anti-racism initiatives and increasing racial diversity.”2
“Anti-racism” is a term that comes from Marxist Critical Race Theory, since “racism” is assumed to go only-and-always one way – from “oppressor” (whites) to “oppressed”. Therefore, whatever can be done to promote People of Color (POC), to bring them into “equity”, even if it is unfair and corrupt, is “anti-racist” and, therefore, a “good” thing. There can be no such thing as “reverse racism”. This is, of course, patently untrue since there are racists on the basis of skin color in all people groups through all history!
But the fact that so many DEI “officers” have ascended into positions of power at educational institutions and corporations is reminiscent of the old Soviet Commissar system. Commissar officers were bureaucrats in charge of perpetuating communist political propaganda and ideology in organizations, placed in administrative positions with power to countermand other administrative heads. You can read in our January 2022 Newsletter about the infamous Trofim Lysenko (available at creationmoments.com in our Resources tab under Newsletters). As head of Soviet Agriculture under Joseph Stalin, he pushed Stalinist propaganda with a foolish commitment to “accelerated evolution” in plants, and he ruined agriculture in the Soviet Union and other communist countries following their lead. Millions died as a result of the foolish commitment to a silly, and evil, ideology. Western scientists and politicians rightly considered it communist foolish incompetence at the time. And we can say the same about the current commitment to DEI, CRT, “woke”, cultural Marxism.
DEI, CRT, and other cultural Marxism in the schools have awakened many Americans to the ideological subversion going on – especially those who have come here from communist countries. One such immigrant is Xi Van Fleet from Communist China, who lived through the Cultural Revolution under Mao Tse Tung. She got involved in the school board meetings of Loudoun County, Virginia in the summer of 2021 giving a 60-second speech that went viral on the internet. People were protesting the many “woke” policies of the school board which resulted in a young lady being sexually abused by a transgendered student in the women’s bathroom at school. “We have to fight back”, she says. “We have to replace the Marxist worldview, all those indoctrinated youth, with the biblical worldview.”3 She likens CRT to China’s Cultural Revolution, a Mao-led purge which also used “identity politics” and left millions of people dead from 1966 to 1976.
Marxism takes the natural human longing for freedom from the true feeling we all have of being “oppressed by the devil” (Acts 10:38), and twists it into a God-less vision, stoking bitterness and envy along the way. In actuality, we all have the opportunity to overcome the oppressions of this world, the flesh, and the devil – internally and forevermore, through Jesus Christ, the Lord!
The more a materialist worldview like evolution is accepted without question, the easier it becomes for biblical views to be cast aside. Marxism and its various aberrations – like Critical Race Theory – take root more easily. This is, in fact, what has happened. As Thomas Jefferson wisely pointed out, “A well informed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny”. Or, in biblical phraseology, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6a).
Woke-ism is surely another reason why we need to continue proclaiming the truth of the Bible, of creation and of our great Creator and Redeemer … and it is another reason why Christians should avoid – if at all possible – putting our children in public schools!
