Matthew 19:4
“And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,”
I have frequently been told throughout my ministry that the subject of creation and evolution does not matter. One church leader in England accused me of hindering the Gospel, while a well-known apologist here in the United States described creation speakers like myself as an “embarrassment”. The refrain has often been this: Just preach Jesus – everything else is superfluous.
In Matthew’s Gospel, in chapter 19, Jesus was talking about marriage. This is because the Pharisees had questioned Him on the subject and were trying to catch Him out. Jesus’ reply was very telling. The first thing He said was: “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female?”
The Greek word for beginning is ἀρχῆς (arche) and is the ame word used at the beginning of John’s Gospel, referring to the beginning of all things. Jesus is saying that Adam and Eve were created at the beginning, and this cannot refer to just the beginning of human history after millions of years of evolution. So, if there were millions of years of evolution, then Jesus was either mistaken – in which case He was not God – or He was lying – in which case He was not God. Obviously, the third option is that Jesus knew exactly what He was talking about because He was and is God. All things, including Adam and Eve, were made through Him.
Prayer: Thank You, Lord God, for the truth of Your word. Thank You that everything in Your word is true and for our benefit. Amen.
