Ecclesiastes 3:10-11
“I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it. He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.”
It is now pretty well known that DNA contains information, encoded by four molecular letters. We are also used to the fact that the amount of information stored in one DNA molecule is enormous. But most members of the public are not really familiar with just how enormous that amount of information is. There may be a few who have begun to realize that DNA has more information than a large multi-volume encyclopedia.
However, the complexity does not end there. A fellow creation speaker once pointed out to me that information can flow in many directions. To illustrate this, he considered the phrase “stressed rats”. Suppose you spell this backwards. It now reads “star desserts”. Both the forward and backward versions contain information, but that information is different, even though the letters used are the same. Then my friend asked me to consider being asked to write a chapter in a smart phone user manual that would explain how the phone downloads apps from the web. But then he adds that the chapter has to be written in such a way that, if it is read backwards, it explains how to get the phone to play media files. Of course, you would complain that the task is impossible. Yet, DNA contains information used in exactly that way, where the forward and backward reading of whole chapters gives entirely different, and useful, information.
Such complexity makes sense when we know that it was God who made things this way.
Prayer: Father, we are in awe at the wonderful way that You have created this world according to Your divine plan. Amen.
