Proverbs 8:27
“When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:”

Sometimes, people write to me to chastise me for stating that the Earth is a sphere. Such people have a negative view of science, which is unfortunate, because true science was invented by biblical Christians. The overwhelming majority of observational science – that which is observed in the present – is correct, and biblical Christians agree with it. It is when evolutionary scientists attempt to comment on what they believe happened in a mythological past that they have problems.

Those who believe in a flat earth will often quote Isaiah 40:22: “It is he who sits above the circle of the earth”. The Hebrew word for circle is khûg (חוּג). The word can be translated as circle or sphere, so the verse is inconclusive, though old commentators, like John Gill, maintain that it means “sphere”. However, when we look at Proverbs 8:27 and Job 26:10, all logical doubt disappears. The verse in Job refers to a circle on the waters, separating light from darkness. The only way a circle could do this is if it is drawn around the sphere of the Earth … that is, a Great Circle, comprised of two lines of longitude. Proverbs 8 draws on this idea in a passage which is clearly referring to the actions of the Second Person of the Trinity in Creation. “When he drew a circle on the face of the deep… then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always.”

Prayer: We acknowledge, Lord God, our Creator, that You made this world the way that You said You did. And You saw that it was very good. Amen.
