Isaiah 54:12
“And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones.”
If the streets of heaven are made of pure gold and its twelve gates are pearl, what are the windows of heaven made of? The King James version of the Bible tells us: “And I will make thy windows of agates.”
What is an agate? According to geologist and agate collector Bill Kitchens, “Agates are treasures of God’s grace that, through natural processes, fill voids in rocks around us for people to find, wonder at, and use.”
How fitting a description – not in scientific terms but in the emotional impact agates can have on us. Kitchens has put together a website – God made agates dot com – that includes an impressive collection of photos he has taken, showing the incredible beauty and variety of agates.
Now, why would a geologist spend so much time photographing agates? As Kitchens tells it, “For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with agates, and have learned lots about them, though even now I’m frequently stumped when I look deeply into these complex creations.”
He admits he is also perplexed by what he sees in his fellow human beings. But there are two things he is absolutely sure about: “The things I know best and am most certain of are the grace of God, which has upheld me all these years, and the trustworthiness of His word, which, as the years go by, I have come more and more to appreciate.”
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the wonders of Your creation – even those that are the result of natural processes. After all, Your Son was responsible for putting those natural processes in place! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
