Paleontologists made a totally unexpected discovery. While excavating fossils in Madagascar, they found a strange-looking, pug-nosed crocodile. Its multi-cusped teeth, similar to vegetarian ankylosaurs’ and stegosaurs’ teeth, show that this crocodile was also a vegetarian!
Researchers positively identified the creature as a crocodile because it had the bony plates in its skin. These plates, called osteoderms, distinguish crocodiles from dinosaurs. Scientists named the unusual new species Simosuchus. It appears that a fully-grown Simosuchus was about three feet long. It had a thicker head and neck than most crocodiles, possibly for burrowing. It resembles another extinct species discovered in Uruguay. Researchers speculated that this resemblance suggests that there was once a land bridge across the Atlantic extending from Madagascar to Uruguay.
Those who believe what the Bible says should not be surprised at this seemingly amazing discovery. The Bible teaches that before sin entered the world, all creatures were vegetarians. Once Adam and Eve sinned, death became a reality for all creatures. Some creatures obviously began adapting to eating meat, but is seems not all crocodiles became meat-eaters, as evidenced by Simosuchus. Creationists also believe that the fossils resulted from the worldwide Genesis Flood that would have mixed the remains of animals from all continents so they did not necessarily migrate to where their fossils are found.
Genesis 1:30 “And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.”
Prayer: Lord, even though marred by sin, Your creation is wondrous. Amen.
