The DNA molecule is a marvelously designed information storage system. All the information necessary to make you is packed into a microscopic space. Even our most sophisticated methods of storing information cannot approach the efficiency of DNA. However, there is much more to appreciate about the structure of DNA.
Physicists used a computer to create virtual models of molecules. The molecules were depicted as beads connected to each other by tubes. Researchers were trying to find out the most efficient shape necessary to get as much molecule as possible into the smallest space. They then confined these virtual molecules within variously-shaped electronic containers. Researchers then had the computer wiggle and slither the molecules into different shapes within each container. They were looking for the most efficient way for the molecules to fill a given space. They discovered that the most efficient shape for a molecule is the specific helix shape found in protein molecules. Other research has shown that the double helix shape that DNA uses is likewise the most efficient way to pack as much molecule into the smallest space.
As an information storage system, DNA was clearly designed by a very wise Creator. Now we learn that DNA molecules, along with proteins, were also designed to have the most efficient shape possible – another fingerprint of our wise Creator, not a product of chance.
