“The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.”
Evolutionary scientists studying the workings of the human brain are trying to find out what the human “mind” is. The problem is that everyone, including scientists, knows that human beings are conscious people with minds. Yet, strict, materialistic science says that there is no scientific evidence for the mind.
Research with people who had brain injuries indicates that the brain and the mind are not the same things. The reality of the human mind seems to have no material basis. This presents a difficult problem for evolutionary scientists who have assumed that evolution, with its materialistic view of reality, is correct. According to the evolutionary view of the world, if something is not measurable by science, that thing is not real. Evolution denies that humans have any nonmaterial part.
Some evolutionists have tried to resolve this problem by saying that human beings are not really conscious. They say that we don’t really have minds. We only think we do. It’s a trick played on us by our nervous systems. Entire books have been devoted to this subject. However, this approach creates a new problem. If we really don’t have minds, we cannot trust the truth of anything we might think. We can’t even trust the thought that we don’t have minds.
The debate among these strict materialist scientists actually amounts to an admission that there is a greater, nonmaterial reality that cannot be measured by science. Yes, the existence of the immaterial, but undeniably real, human mind (should I say “soul”?) also testifies to the Creator!
Father, I thank You that You have made it so evident that human beings are more than simply material organisms. Strengthen Your people on Earth so that we can witness to Your truth, which truly feeds the soul. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
