A “Devilish Muddle” – Embracing Chaos

23May

Emphasis on absolute references, such as represented by the kilogram standard and mathematics as discussed in the last two blog posts, are vestiges of good science which are currently being attacked by a new generation of materialist Marxists, pantheists, and other non-deist scientists who try to make chaos into a creative force. Rather than look for God’s order behind the veil of chaos, they preach the naturalism of eastern philosophy and the confusions of Karl Marx. Marx admitted he taught “Words all mixed up into a devilish muddle. Thus anyone may think just what he chooses to think.” (1)

But the roots of modern science and the scientific method can be traced in large part to a biblical worldview. Modern science did not originate in the East but in the West because there was the advantage of the Biblical tradition and worldview, not because Westerners were any smarter than Easterners (as early evolutionists tried to argue). A biblical worldview simply aided the progress of civilization and modern science. The thinking that there are absolute references from which we can glean concrete information and draw conclusions in the form of scientific principles applied to the created “order” comes from the presupposition of a Creator who established law and order in the first place.

As we try to understand and model the “real world” with increasing levels of accuracy down to minute detail, we find that the exactness of mathematics can box in and oversimplify the real case. Situations are rarely one thing or another, but are often a matter of being one thing to a degree, and to another degree something else. For example, you and I are alive to a degree, and dead to a degree as well, when you get down to the microscopic level of our cellular structure. Body cells are dying and being made new all the time. Our skin, the body’s largest organ, is constantly renewing itself – on average once every 30 days for a complete turnover, though it varies based on age and other factors.

But it’s interesting to note that machine advances in the real world, such as the increasing accuracy of automatic-focusing cameras, and smooth-starting and stopping elevators, trains, and driverless automatic cars, are accomplished through mathematics – assigning values between 0 and 1 to describe shades of distinction in the “real world”. So, once again, exact mathematical truth repeatedly iterated through calculations in computer micro-processors is a link between the “real world” of contradiction and absolute truth.

“Real world” material order is indeed a reflection of higher order, such as intangible mathematics and immaterial energy, and not vice versa. The question really becomes, what is ultimate reality? Is it the material “real world” or is it the spiritual reality and truth of the Creator of the “real world”? Modern science and technology keep pointing to ultimate truth as representing the absolute spiritual reality of the living energetic Word (the Logos), the biblical Creator! “In the beginning was the Word”… “For the word of God is alive and active (powerful and penetrating” (John 1:1, Hebrews 4:12).
