Dedicating and Re-dedicating a Nation

08May

“Blessed is the nation whose God is nature… (oops)… whose God is the Lord!” (Psalm 33:12)

On April 29, 1607, at the founding of the Jamestown Colony in what is now Virginia, USA, Pastor Robert Hunt made a special declaration. It was a declaration of great vision and great consecration, which arguably has been honored and proven true in many ways for over 400 years! – about the United States, and the gospel outreach that has flowed within and from “these shores”.

“We do hereby dedicate this Land, and ourselves, to reach the People within these shores with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to raise up Godly generations after us, and with these generations take the Kingdom of God to all the earth… May those who come here to inhabit join us in this Covenant and this most noble work, that the Holy Scriptures may be fulfilled. From these very shores the gospel shall go forth, not only to this new world, but the entire world.”

America organized a government based on principles from the Bible – principles of liberty that we find in the Bible, its God and its Savior Jesus Christ; and principles of checks and balances to the flawed and fundamental depravity of mankind which tend toward abuse of power and tyranny. And America has been organizing, giving, spending, and sending a bulk of the missions effort for worldwide gospel outreach for many years - as well as leading and fighting for freedom against tyranny in the world. That continues to this day, 250 years from the founding of the United States in 1776 – in spite of all the evil influence of modern culture. It is indeed a wonderful legacy - and responsibility. As has been said about the age we are living in, "Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom".

This May 17, a Sunday, as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026, the current administration and faith leaders are organizing a “National Moment of Reflection” on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The day is meant for rededication as “One Nation Under God” and for reflection on the blessings of the biblical legacy of America and how God has powerfully manifested Himself in our history. An accompanying booklet, “Prayers and Proclamations Throughout American History,” is available at www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Prayers-and-Proclamations.pdf.

The gospel is an offer of ultimate freedom, and the biblical revelation of our Creator is one of a freedom-giving God. From the very beginning, with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, God has desired a relationship with those whom He created “in His image”, offering His created abundance along with a free choice of relationship with Him. They could choose to obey Him about the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil - or not! Even in a covenant commitment, a love relationship must allow for freedom, or else it is not true love.

God’s call to the gospel, and our redemption from sin through accepting Jesus Christ as Savior, as well as our ongoing relationship through prayer and fellowship, is also our choice. And He came to set us free from the bondage and tyranny of this world, so thus the Bible says, “Stand fast in the liberty for which Christ has made us free” (Galatians 5:1).

Reverend Samuel Francis Smith wrote of this in his 1831 lyrics for the patriotic song America:

“My country ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrims’ pride, from every mountain side,
Let freedom ring.

Our fathers’ God to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright, with freedom’s holy light, protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.”

Martin Luther King Jr, in his famous I Have a Dream speech, used the song America and its phrases for his great clarion call to freedom’s ideal of “color-blindness”. Color-blindness is true freedom, not the race preferences of Marxist "critical theory" popular in the progressive Left today. As he famously said in his speech, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!" King famously spoke in his rhythmic style about letting “freedom ring” from all the “mountainsides”, “hilltops”, “heights”, and “mounds” all around the geographical locations of America.

Freedom is indeed a great and eternal truth, because it is from our Maker, the God of all creation! May the gospel continue to flow in and from “these very shores” until our Creator calls an end to this evil age, which, in globalist, humanist fashion, as at the rebellion at the Tower of Babel, seeks to elevate the “creature (nature) rather than the Creator, Who is blessed forever. Amen” (Romans 1:25).
