Demise of Climate Alarmism? - Biblical Truth vs Doomsayers

04Sep

Have you noticed that Climate Change, originally known as Global Warming, is quietly being abandoned (or at least put on the back burner) in many circles of progressive activism?

The usual voices are blaming it, though, for the flash flooding from rock and glacial collapse on very steep slopes in Nepal in late August, 2026. While our hearts go out to all those caught in the flooding, remember, it’s always easy to “fear-monger” scary scenarios with ill-defined and complicated issues.

And it wasn’t that long ago (the 1950’s and 60’s) when we were worried about our inability to feed the world – millions of people were starving in China, India, and Africa. And Stanford University Professor Paul Ehrlich, among others, was saying that overpopulation and limited resources would be the end of us all. People and planet were in peril!

Some short years later, we saw the implementation of innovation, technology, and free enterprise in agriculture and otherwise, such that the fear-mongering of yesteryear has been debunked. In developed as well as many developing countries, we are able today to grow more food on less land, feeding more people than ever before, keeping thousands of acres in their natural state which otherwise would have to be devoted to agriculture. The reason for this is innovative technology, conservation, and trade – all working together to perfect high food-yielding crops and deliver products where they are in demand.

The doomsayers were wrong.

It’s interesting to note that history often overrules and disproves popular fad philosophy. We are feeding more people now than ever before in history, and in spite of what the environmental doomsayers were saying 60 + years ago. The fact is that Judeo/Christian civilization has benefited humanity by bringing forth modern civilization and the Scientific Revolution. These things came out of Judeo/Christian Europe because Europe was heavily influenced by the Bible!

Reading and believing the Bible gave people faith to decipher the laws of the covenant-law-giving God of the Bible. It gave people a Worldview to seek to uncover the Great Creator’s specifications for His creation!

This Worldview also provides guidelines for good stewardship of the earth and its resources, so that Biblically based societies have had the best track record for conservation and environmental improvement. Think of Israel, which since its return to biblical and democratic principles in 1948 has been turned from overgrazed desert into gardens.

But wait! Aren’t we on the edge of disaster with “climate change”? Shouldn’t we be worried sick that all this human activity is “unsustainable”? Lots of people have “moved on” from this agenda-driven pseudoscience, and rightly so.

In the November 1974 edition of the National Geographic Magazine, a long article on climate change was quite concerned about the earth lapsing back into another ice age! The article pointed out, quoting the U.S. National Science Board at the time, “During the last 20 to 30 years world temperature has fallen… and sharply so over the last decade”. They were quite concerned that man-made dust from cultivation and coal particulates were blocking solar radiation much like volcanic explosions are known to do, causing surface temperatures to drop. The article was quite concerned that we could easily slip into another “Little Ice Age”.

The “Little Ice Age” is the term for what occurred from approximately 1400 to 1850 A.D. Before then, Greenland was actually “green” so that the Vikings could settle there. But then when the Little Ice Age came rivers and lakes froze over, crops failed, famines struck, and the Greenland settlements were wiped out. History records how the Dutch became a nation of ice skaters on their frozen canals, and that heavy artillery was dragged across a frozen Hudson River to Staten Island during the American Revolutionary War.

So, scientists were very concerned about the planet turning cold again. National Geographic reported, “For the first time in earth’s long history, climatologists agree, human activities, smoke, tractor dust, jet exhaust, smog, may be beginning to affect weather and climate on a par with natural forces.”

Now they have been warning about disaster overtaking us with “climate change” involving global warming for over 30 years. Yet all the dire times and scenarios have failed to materialize.

False philosophies and false worldviews lead to believing things that are actually the opposite of what is right, true, and good. And evolutionism is, of course, one such major false philosophy!

After the cataclysmic Flood of Noah, God promised that the seasons, with their seed time and harvest, would not cease while the world is here. But the cycling and timing of seed time and harvest varies up and down with temperature cycles mainly caused by the sun - throughout history. And we can be comforted by the fact that He has promised that the weather will always allow crops to be grown.

"While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22).
