I used to drive to and from work, making the same turn off the main highway. If I had the radio set to an AM station, I would get so much static at the turn that I could hardly hear what was being communicated. You see, at that turn-off, electric power lines overhead crossed the highway to follow the road, and my AM radio became heavily affected by Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI). The electro-magnetic field of the radio reception was heavily “disturbed” by electro-magnetic induction from the electricity in the overhead power lines.
It has only been in recent history that the heart was reduced to merely a blood pump – a naturalistic notion that stems from the influence of evolutionism. Before that, the heart was long considered the seat of emotion and commitment. And modern science is finding out more and more interesting aspects about the operation of the heart.
The heart has, for example, much more electrical activity than the brain in the sense that it induces an electro-magnetic field thousands of times as strong as the electro-magnetic field from our brains. The medical profession today uses combined electro-cardiograms (ECG) and magneto-cardiograms (MCG) for diagnostic testing of the heart – in addition to electro-encephalograms (EEG) for the brain. All because of this “force-field” issuing from our hearts. And as people in love can attest to, there is something about being in the presence of another person’s “force-field” – a communication that occurs.

The Bible says we hear God and interact with Him, as well as with people and with our own heads (our thinking), very much through our hearts. Consider this, with both our hearts and minds generating electro-magnetic fields, they can communicate with each other through an invisible force field much like a WIFI set-up, as well as directly from nerves in the neck.
Consider also that Albert Einstein famously said, “The field is the sole governing agency of the particle”, paraphrased, “The field is the fundamental reality”. Or as the brilliant Nicola Tesla, who developed alternating electric current (AC) generation put it, “If you want to understand the secrets of the universe, you have to think in terms of frequency, energy, and vibrations”.
The Bible teaches that the spirit of man awakens to God in our hearts, “…for with the heart man believes unto righteousness’ (Rom 10:10). And it says in Psalm 95:7-8, “Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your heart…”. The Bible urges us to “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Prov 4:23). There is indeed life-giving communication through our hearts.
The Bible made real the concept of a “broken heart” (as King David describes his was in Psalm 69). The rationalists of recent history would say, “Aw, come on, we all know that grief is in the mind, as is all emotion, not the heart”. Yet the heart is being found more and more to be an organ that “feels”.
Known medically as tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy, broken heart syndrome involves the heart muscle failing to pump effectively due to a highly emotional event responding to stress hormones – like those that come from severe grief. Modern X-ray techniques have allowed doctors to visualize what actually happens to the heart muscle during broken heart syndrome. The upper region of the left ventricle, the heart’s principal pumping chamber, contracts normally, but the apex or bottom part appears paralyzed. The tip of the ventricle actually balloons outward instead of contracting inward. Patients can become extremely ill and even die, though given time, they generally experience a full recovery.
In addition to its accuracy about a broken heart, the Bible has much other precision health guidance being proven in the modern era. For example, “A merry heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit dries out the bones” (Proverbs 17:22). “Bright eyes gladden the heart, and good news puts fat on the bones” (Proverbs 15:30).
Many reports have demonstrated the benefits of a “positive attitude” and the problems of a depressed attitude in battling through disease, medical recovery from illness, surgery, etc. Medical science realizes that a good immune system is far and away the “best medicine”, and ultimately the “only medicine” (of a material sort anyway).
And the body’s immune system is to a large degree a function of the healthy activity of bone marrow – as the Bible in its ancient wisdom brings up by contrast in the scriptures above. Bone marrow is a moist tissue rich in fats (50% fat), containing the DNA and plenty of nourishment for the comprehensive production of billions of different blood cells: red cells for the transport of oxygen, blood platelets for clotting, and the various white cells of the immune system (granulocytes, macrophages, and lymphocytes). While the immune system’s blood cells are developed, concentrated, and trained in other organs and systems of the body, they are all initially produced in the bones. There’s a lot to be said for fat healthy bone marrow!
Truly the heart is tied to our emotions, picking up on various immaterial energy fields exemplified by its electro-magnetic field, as it would be if it were indeed the seat of our souls! Science is just beginning to understand, or at least get to edge of, this spiritual link, yet materialists will arrogantly dismiss it.
C.S. Lewis eloquently made the point in his essay The Abolition of Man that you cannot remove the function of “the heart” from genuine discernment and truth. He wrote how University Professors in his day acted smart by trying to debunk First Principles of truth - such as loyalty and faith and commitment, including Creation by God. He called them “men without chests” who were training others to be “men without chests”.
So let’s pose the question. Similar to electro-magnetic interference in AM radio from electric power lines, what if there was interference through the unseen force-field of our hearts in communication with the Lord? What spiritual interference from the devil, or from a poorly tuned signal, is causing us to miss what the Lord may be saying in His love and concern for us? Such interference could indeed turn that reception of the Lord into a bunch of static. Through His Word and Spirit, getting “right with God” in prayer and repentance, people can better tune in to His voice and hear the truth that sets us free!
